Import and Drag & Drop

contents | prev | next

You can import multiple files at once into eCAT of any type. From within the dashboard or from within the notebook section.

Drag and Drop

As of eCAT 4.0.8; eCAT now supports the HTML 5 feature drag and drop. This video shows it in action. This feature is only supported in the following browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox. Internet Explorer does not support multiple drag and drop but you can still use the interface by selecting add files at the top of the import dialog.

Dashboard Import

You will find the dashboard importer in the left hand ‘record’ menu in the dashboard. The import option is called ‘import into notebook’.

The dashboard imports into a location defined by you or the administrator depending on how eCAT has been setup. To change the import location you simply need to go to the preferences section and change the location of the preference “Select the default folder to create new records in”.

Notebook Import

The record import option can be found on the left hand ‘Children’ menu on the notebook page. This importer imports into the parent record you are looking at. So if you are within you user record and you import a file. It will become a child of the user record.

How to use the importer

The import pop up has 2 sections the first can be seen below.

Import popup

This is where you import the files into eCAT. eCAT will save these files in its cache as they are uploaded. By default eCAT only allows an upload limit of 50mb per file and maximum 1gb per file. This can be configured within the preferences section of eCAT.

You can drag and drop the files onto this pop up and they will automatically upload, only if your browser supports it. Alternatively you can select add files at the top left hand of the dialog. On IE 8 IE 9 you will need to add each file individually as it does not support drag and drop.

Once all the files have been uploaded select next and the pop up below will appear.

Import popup

This table contains all the files that you have uploaded. The drop down list beside each filename lists the various importers than you can use for that document type. By default if eCAT has a document importer that matches an uploaded file type it will preselect that importer for that file. You can force eCAT to not convert the file by selecting do not convert from the drop down list.

If you do not convert the file eCAT will create a special web store record that will allow you to download the unaltered file and replace that file with a new version. This essentially allows you to use the editor of your choice locally and replace the old file in eCAT with the newer version.

Once finish'' is selected on this pop up eCAT will create the various records in the target location.
