The Dashboard

What is the dashboard?

When you first login to eCAT you see the Dashboard. In the main table in the middle of the page it shows you a list of all the records in eCAT that you have permission to see. For each record shown, you can see the time it was last modified, the name of the record, the template of the record and the location of the record in the tree. Clicking on the record name takes you to that record.

You can use the filters at the top of each column to filter the Dashboard results. The name and template filters are pretty simple - just start typing into the box and after you have entered three letters a list of the matches to your query will appear in the dropdown list as shown in the image below.

You can then use the up and down arrows and enter or the mouse to select one of the values in the dropdown and perform the search with that filter.

Filtering with dates is more complex, but also more powerful. Clicking on the search box drops down the menu shown below. You can choose specific dates with quick filters at the top of the menu or use calendars to choose a specific date or date range to search on.

Finally, you can filter by template using the quick links on the left hand menu. These quickly filter the list shown in the Dashboard by the template clicked on. This is equivalent to typing the template name into the template filter.

You can determine what templates appear in your list of quick filters by going to your Preferences page and clicking on the Customise Menus option. You can also click here for more help on customizing the Dashboard menu.

Creating from the Dashboard

You can create new records from the Dashboard. The location you are creating in is determined by the preference titled "Select the default folder to create new records in". This Dashboard feature is intended to provide a convenient way of quickly creating records.

By default records from the Dashboard are created in your home folder so are private to you. You may wish to change this if you are creating public Projects for example.

If you mouse over the create menus, then you can choose to instantly create from a given set of templates. You can customize these templates on the Customise Menus preferences page.

If you select a template, that template is created instantly and you are taken to the editing page. If you click on Create New you are taken to the normal record creation page and can choose from the full list of templates you have available to you. Importing from the Dashboard

You can import files directly from the dashboard. The location you are importing in is determined by the same preference as for creating records preference, titled "Select the default folder to create new records in". This Dashboard feature intended to provide a convenient way of quickly importing records.

You can import most office documents like Word and Excel and many image types, even special scientific image types such as Zeiss LSM or Biorad confocal.
