Search is the fastest way to find your data in eCAT - all records are searchable.

The simplest kind of search is just like Google - enter some words and they'll be looked for in all the records in the system.

The results of this search are shown in a list. The image below shows the search form with the result list underneath it.

Sometimes you get back a lot of results - eCAT will arrange these in pages for you. If you want them all in a single page, check the checkbox.

Sometimes you only want results for a specific Project - if this is the case then select the Project from the drop-down list.

Once you get some results, you might want to refine the search further. If there is more than one result, you'll get the checkbox shown on the right. If you check it, and enter a new search term, then eCAT will search in just the current result set, for the new term.

Advanced Search Options

eCAT also provides several advanced options. Click the "Advanced search options" text to show the advanced search controls.

You can restrict the search to only certain types (templates) of information, for example Biorad Files, Deltavision Files and Folders. You can select multiple templates in the list by holding down control while left clicking.

Filtering by template

Filtering by template

If you select a particular template or templates for searching, then you can select to see the results as a table rather than a list. If multiple templates are selected the fields will be concatonated together.

You can also restrict the search to only records of images which have thumbnails.

Searching for specific field/value pairs

You can also search on a specific field and value, e.g. on the Method for any Method field containing a particular word. For example, if you wanted to search for Method fields including the word ELISA, you would put Method in the Field Name box and ELISA in the Search String box.

For complex searches you can also use more advanced syntax. Field names and values can be combined with the : character and search terms can be combined with AND and OR. For example you could search for Experiments with Method containing the name of an experiment and Results containing spreadsheet. Note that if your field names have spaces in them you need to use "Field Name":"Field Value" syntax - "My Field":"My Value".

The full syntax for search expressions is described on this web page. You can use wildcards, search on value ranges, and require or exclude terms in a search.
