An online notebook: Advanced Options

contents | prev | next

There are of course lot of things you can do in eCAT in addition to using it as a simple but powerful notetaking device. This entry describes one way you can take advantage of eCAT's organizing capabilities: by creating records with structure. We saw in the An online notebook entry how to create a new Document. Document is one kind of template that eCAT offers, but there are more than 20 other kinds of eCAT templates to choose from. Here is an example, the Experiment:

The experiment template

Whereas Document just gives you one field to work in, with Experiment you get seven: Method, Objectives, etc.

You can create an Experiment template in the same way that you create a Document, by clicking Create in Notebook from the Dashboard and selecting Experiment.

You are then taken to the following screen.

Here you are working inside one of the seven fields in the Experiment, Method.

You can do all the things inside this field that you can do in a Document.

When you finish what you are doing in the Method field you can move on to enter data in the other fields.

To start entering data in another field just click on the edit button at the left of that field. The text editor will appear at the top, as with the Method field, and you can begin entering data.

In addition to using the more than 20 kinds of notebook records that come with eCAT, it's easy to create your own kinds of records! That is described here.
