Creating container templates

templates | contents

In order to create anything in the inventory system you need to first create containers to put your inventory in. Like everything else in eCAT containers are built from templates. This page describes creating a container template.

Begin by clicking on the Templates tab.

On the menu on the left hand side, shown below, click "Create Container Template".

You can create a variety of container types in eCAT.

Location Containers

The simplest of these types is a "Location Container". This is a container that can hold other containers, but not samples. An example of this would be a Freezer that contains Shelves. The Freezer is a location container that holds other location containers which are the shelves.

To create a location container, select "Location Container" as the Container Type you wish to be built.

The screen updates and now looks like the following:

Give the Container Template a name and a description. You are also prompted to supply an image to represent the container. This can be anything that helps you identify what the container is. Click "Change Image" and browse your local PC for an image suitable.

When you are finished click "Finish" to create your new Container Template. You will be returned to the list of templates and your new template will be visible in the list. Inventory Managers and users who have permission to create containers will now be able to create new containers of the type specified by your new Container Template!

Freezer Boxes and Well Plates

If a container is not a location container, then it is a sample container - a freezer box, a well plate or another kind of sample container.

Freezer boxes and well plates are representations of the corresponding physical constructs. Freezer boxes and well plates both allow storage of samples in given locations in the container. The difference between a well plate and a freezer box is that you can take individual samples out of a freezer box, whereas you can only take the entire well plate out of the freezer. So the freeze thaw counts for a freezer box are individual to the samples, but are common to the container for a well plate.

Select a freezer box as the container type, and call it a "Freezer Box 7x7". You also need to supply a description. Then click Next. The following screen is shown.

You use this page to customise your freezer box. Since we are creating a 7x7 box so select the box dimensions to be 7x7, and then click "Update". You see the representation of the box shrink from 10x10 to 7x7. In addition all sample locations are removed.

The next step is to decide which of the 49 possible locations in the new sample container can be used to store samples. Click "Select all locations" to quickly populate all 49 as valid locations. You can then click on each individual location to add or remove the ability to create a sample there. You can see that I have removed locations from the three corner most locations in each corner of the tray.

When you are finished click "Finish" to create your new Container Template. You will be returned to the list of templates and your new template will be visible in the list. Inventory Managers and users who have permission to create containers will now be able to create new containers of the type specified by your new Container Template!

Sample Container Other

The final kind of container template to create is the "Sample Container Other" type. This is a sample container that is not a freezer box or a well plate.

In order to create a sample container of this type you need to supply an image which will be used as the background of the sample container. We recommend using an image approximately 600px square for this. Enter a name, description and supply the image and click Next. You are taken to the following screen.

Now you need to add sample locations to your sample container. For each location you wish to add, click Add Sample Location. You can then move the sample location around on top of the image until it is in the desired location. You can see that we have added two sample locations in the top left and top middle locations. We would continue to add all 15 locations in the tray.

When you are finished click "Finish" to create your new Container Template. You will be returned to the list of templates and your new template will be visible in the list. Inventory Managers and users that have permission to create containers will now be able to create new containers of the type specified by your new Container Template!
