Linking to files

contents | prev | next

Linking between records and files is a very useful way to increase the benefits you get from using eCAT by establishing relationships between particular pieces of data. You can create links between files and any records you like. For example, you can link a file such as a spreadsheet or an image, to a particular field in an Experiment record. To do this view an Experiment record, click Edit in the menu on the left, and click the editing link in the field where you want to put the link to the file. Then select the text you want to link to. Then click on the "Browse file stores and link to files" button in the editor control as shown below.

The following window will pop up showing the file stores you have access to.

Click a file store name, then use the tree on the right hand side to navigate to a file or folder then click on it. The file you selected will appear in the Insert selected file link section. Click "Insert" to make the link to the file.

If the file you are linking to is an image file that eCAT is able to thumbnail, an thumbnail image will be generated along with the download link when the record is saved. A particularly cute example of both can be seen below.

If the file is actually a folder, you will be able to follow the folder link and browse the file store from the link.

You can make links to file in any record that has a field of type Text or a field of type Resource.
